“JD” DeGarmo has spent over ten years working with dogs of all breeds, ages, and abilities. She specializes in training that focuses on obedience, manners, and social behaviors. A certified evaluator for the AKC Canine Good Citizen and S.T.A.R. Puppy programs, JD is a strong believer in the power of positive training.
As a volunteer with the AACA (Animal Assisted Compassionate Activities) Program at the Greensville Correctional Center, JD works with offenders who train dogs as 'in-house' therapeutic canines. JD is also a former trainer for Pixie's Pen Pals, in which offenders in Central Virginia prisons train and socialize rescue dogs that may have otherwise been euthanized in local shelters. These programs not only save dogs, they also promote inmate rehabilitation and provide valuable job training and life skills to offenders.
JD firmly believes that obedience training can and should be joyful for both dog and human. She incorporates trick training into her obedience classes as a way for pups and people to find the fun in training. JD is a Certified Trick Dog Instructor (CTDI) through Do More With Your Dog. Her rescue dog Tucker is both a Canine Good Citizen as well as a certified Expert Trick Dog.
JD enjoys working with people almost as much as dogs, and says that the best part of her job is watching the bond between dogs and their humans grow in strength and love through training.
JD is pictured here with Tucker, her 10-year old lab mix rescue pup. She lives in Mechanicsville, Virginia, with her husband and three children, along with Tucker and his three favorite kitties, Liam, Milo, and Zazzles.
